What is Karen Tribe?
Karen tribe is an ethnic minority group living in Nothern Thailand. They have own culture and language which is different from Thai people.
They call themselves "Pgaz'Knyaw".
カレンは、タイ北部に暮らす少数民族です。タイの人々とは異なる、独自の言語や文化を持っています。
カレンの人々は、自分たち自身のことを「パーカニョー」と呼んでいます。
Self-sufficient life
Karen people live a self-sufficient based life. They grow own food, hunt and gather in forests, and raise livestocks.
Moreover, traditional house building and weaving are also important works during agricultural off-season.
カレンの人々は、豊かな自然環境と人間の知恵を活かしながら、自給自足ベースの生活を送っています。
日々の仕事は、稲・野菜・コーヒーなどの作物栽培、森での狩猟採集、水牛・豚・鶏の飼育など。農閑期である乾季には、家の建設・手入れのほか、機織りなどもしています。
Traditions
Lifestyle change of Karen people puts a burden on the mountainous enviroment in recent years. Also, the traditions such as handworks and herbal medicine is now vanishing.
Through making natural products, "Chiku Chiku Tong Tong" is seeking a sustainable lifestyle so that we can protect the nature and Karen's traditions.
現在、村におけるライフスタイルの変化により、自然環境に負荷がかかっているほか、機織り技術や薬草の知識など、長く受け継がれてきたカレンの伝統も、急速に失われつつあります。
「ちくちくトントン」は、ナチュラルなものづくりに取り組みながら、自然や手仕事のあふれる持続可能な暮らしを模索しています。
